Snowcrest Maltese started in 1992 with the dream of a young girl. This young girl would pour over dog magazines as if they were novels, looking for anything about the white silken coated, black button-nosed breed she had fallen in love with; the endearing Maltese. It wasn't long before she began to beg her parents (who were devout Toy Poodle lovers and had raised a few litters since acquiring their first two Champion sired TP's in 1989), if she could get a Maltese. The answer was always, "NO, we don't need another breed". She persisted in asking, and all the while informing them that Maltese didn't shed, and promising that she'd do all the work if only they would agree to letting her have one. Finally, one day in July of 1993, she saw an ad in the local newspaper. Her heart jumped into her throat. There, listed under the Pets section, was an ad for two female Maltese. She went to her parents and begged to "Please just go look." They agreed and took her over to see them, and she instantly fell in love.
As it turned out, the two Maltese females were a mother and daughter. The daughter dog was a petite little babydoll faced darling, just like the ones in the magazines, this immediately became her favorite. :)
The story behind the dog's need for a new home was that their heartbroken owner's husband was serving in Desert Storm. She was being forced to leave her gorgeous Lake Michigan home, to move to an apartment in a small nearby town and she wasn't allowed to take "the girls". The two Maltese had never been apart and the owner requested that they be placed in the same home. After a little discussion the girl's mom and dad decided to let her take them both home. They were very hairy and needed to be groomed, but the girl knew that under all that hair, lay two beautiful Maltese who were just what she had been wanting for so long.
So they went home with the girl, and although unsure of what was going on, they seemed to be fairly happy as long as they were together. Because the girl and her mother were accustomed to grooming poodles, they decided to exercise their scissoring skills on the two new Maltese. They were clipped down, brushed out, and bathed. It was amazing to see how white and clean they became and their grooming made them full of playfulness and energy. The mother dog's name was Tia Morei of Marsh Farm known as ("Tia") and the daughter dog's name was Katie.
The young girl was me, and "Katie" became "Kaydee" and was registered as Snowcrest's Fair Lil' Kaydee-le.
..: How I acquired my second "Katie" :..
After registering Kaydee and sending for a 5 generation pedigree, it turned out that she had been sired by a male from the famous Richelieu kennel and she had a lovely pedigree. So before long, the quest began to find a champion or champion sired male to breed her to. Eventually a proven stud was located from the Sun Canyon line and he was purchased and bred to Kaydee. From that breeding two beautiful puppies were born. The female became Snowcrest Sweet Lil' Sarah-Lee and the male was sold to a "posh" home on Drummond Island, Michigan. I really loved Sarah, but at six months of age, I decided to give her to a friend who had been admiring her for quite some time. She was beautiful and showy, but I felt that she deserved the undivided attention of this friend who had no dog and desperately wanted her.
In 1995, when Sarah was almost 2, her owner brought her back to be bred to Gallerias Barbarella Edition ("Joey") who was pointed and on his way to his Champion title. This breeding produced three beautiful babies, a female and two males. The female was chosen to stay at Snowcrest and she became Snowcrest Sweet Anna-Lee. She was a petite and lovely little girl with a soft spirit.
In 1996 Sarah came back for a repeat breeding. Again there were three offspring and again the little female was retained at Snowcrest. She became Snowcrest Sweet Jamie-Lee and was one of my very favorites due to her endearing personality and her little face which strongly resembled a soft baby bunny.
In 1997, Sarah again returned and this time she was bred to Snowcrest Montgumery Bear, a son of "Joey's". From that breeding there was a litter of three girls born. However (no comma here) when the female pup that was supposed to come back to Snowcrest was ready, the lives of me and my parents had changed and by the time we could have taken the puppy, her surrogate owner and her own doggy mom and sister had grown too attached to her. I decided I couldn't bear to part them so I told the surrogate owner that I would wait for the "puppy back" until this female was old enough to be bred and if she was bred and produced a female I would take her first female pup instead. So when Snowy Acres Olivia Lee was bred, I took her first female pup instead...and that is how my 2nd Katie came to be.

This story is long, but I hope it helps others understand my love and attachment to the Maltese.
